Osmium(III) chloride trihydrate is used as a reagent for preparation of dichlorodihydridoosmium complexes. It is also useful as starting materials and an efficient alkane oxidation catalyst in the presence of pyridine and hydrogen oxide.

Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and powdered metals.
